Permanent residency

Temporary Resident status

A temporary resident is a foreign national who is legally authorized to enter Canada for temporary purposes.

Customs and Immigration Canada (CIC) processes these applications under several categories:

Temporary residents are subject to various conditions, namely the length of their stay in Canada [R183].

Permanent Resident status

Becoming a Permanent Resident (PR) is the first step in obtaining your Canadian citizenship. There are many programs through which individuals can obtain their PR status.

There are two main programs through which international students apply:

  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  • Express Entry (EE) Program

There are many other programs which you may be eligible for PR through as well. CIC has designed an online tool to help you find out which ones fit you.
