Mobility program: UOIT - Politecnico di Torino

Guidelines for 2017-2018 Student Mobility ICCD Scholarship to Politecnico di Torino, Italy

This scholarship provides funding for students to travel for research purposes to our partner institution in Italy, Politecnico di Torino (PdT). It aims to build further academic and research ties with PdT. This opportunity is made possible by contributions from the Italian Cultural Centre of Durham (ICCD).

This program will provide:

  • Funds of up to $3,000 for graduate students to undertake a research visit at PdT, for a minimum of one month.
  • Funds of up to $3,000 for undergraduate students to undertake a research or internship placement through PdT, for a minimum of two months.  

A maximum of four scholarships will be funded in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Eligibility:

Eligible graduate students must meet these conditions:

  • Enrolled full-time in a research graduate program at the time of application and during the proposed exchange.
  • Must not have submitted their thesis for defence.
  • Must be in good academic standing.

Eligible undergraduate students must meet these conditions:

  • Enrolled full-time.
  • Returning to full-time studies at UOIT for at least one semester after the placement.
  • Must be in good academic standing and meet any academic requirements set by the student’s faculty.

Application process:

The application package should be submitted by email to the International office. Applications will be accepted until Friday, February 17 at 4 p.m.  

Required content for application package: Graduate students

  • Letter of intent from the student that includes:
    • Proposed research program for collaboration with PdT.
    • Relevance of the visit to the graduate student’s degree and research program.
    • Relevance of the research visit to future research or career plans.
    • Proposed dates.
  • Letter of support from the student’s supervisor that includes:
    • Confirmation of relevance of the proposed research program at PdT to the student’s work.
    • Confirmation of any continuing funding for the student, currently and during the proposed travel times.
  • Letter of support from a counterpart academic at PdT willing to host the student and support the proposed research at PdT.
  • An unofficial copy of partial transcripts for the program, where available.

Required content of the application package: Undergraduate students

  • Letter of intent from the student that includes:
    • Proposed subject area for the research or internship placement.
    • Relevance of the placement to the student’s degree program and future career plans.
    • Proposed dates.
  • Letter of recommendation from a UOIT faculty member.  
  • An unofficial copy of partial transcripts for the program, where available. 

Criteria for selection:

The Vice-President Research, Innovation and International will select a small committee to review applications. Successful graduate applications will demonstrate:

  • How the visit is relevant to the graduate student's research, including possibility of publication.
  • A strong probability of developing lasting research collaboration in a particular discipline, including future student mobility opportunities in both directions.
  • Development of research synergies that leverage each institution’s strengths.
  • Willingness to present to UOIT faculty and graduate students on the collaboration opportunities with PdT, upon return.

Successful undergraduate applications will demonstrate:

  • Relevance of the placement to the student’s degree program and future career plans.
  • Potential for the placement to be an excellent learning experience.
