The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee (QEIIDJ) Scholarship Program

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee (QEIIDJ or QE) Scholarship Program is a national scholarship program for student mobility between Canada and the countries of the Commonwealth. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities to its students through this prestigious program.

The QEIIDJ Scholarship Program is a partnership of Universities Canada, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Rideau Hall Foundation. It is made possible with financial support from the Government of Canada, provincial governments and the private sector. 

Up to 54 UOIT students will participate as Queen Elizabeth Scholars through outbound exchanges to our partners in Commonwealth countries or through scholarships for international students from the Commonwealth to study in master’s programs at UOIT.

  • QE scholarships for undergraduate experiential learning placements

    The QE Scholarship Program provides opportunities for upper-year undergraduates to gain international experience as a part of their studies at UOIT. The program provides scholarships of up to $6,000 for an experiential-learning placement with a UOIT partner in a Commonwealth country. Placements last a minimum of three months and are typically organized during the summer. Placement opportunities are developed with the faculties, and placement availability is subject to the availability of opportunities with partners, as well as program funding. All QE Scholars must participate in on-campus activities before and after the placement, as a condition of the scholarship.

    Eligibility:

    Candidates for the QE Scholarship Program must:

    • Be entering their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies.
    • Be 35 years of age or under at time of their application.
    • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    • Work, study or conduct research on a full-time basis at the partner institution.
    • Be in good standing and meet GPA requirements set by the student’s faculty.

    Placements:

    The following placements are open for competition to students in the listed undergraduate programs:

    All faculties:

    • Research placements at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.
    • Internship placements in developing countries through World University Service of Canada (WUSC).
    • Non-governmental organization (NGO) placements in India in partnership with the Ontario-India Exchange Program ($8,000 scholarship).

    Faculty of Science: Chemistry

    • Research placement in Chemistry at University of Cardiff in Wales, United Kingdom.

    Faculty of Business and Information Technology:

    • Internship placements in:
      • Barbados
      • Singapore
      • Trinidad and Tobago

    Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science

    • Research placement in Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, India.

    Applications:

    Students interested in a QE Scholarship Program placement must apply directly to the International office by Friday, November 18. To apply, please email internationaloffice@uoit.ca with the subject line QEII application.

    Applications must include:

    • Statement of Interest, including how this experience fits with your educational and career goals.
    • Unofficial transcript.
    • Up-to-date CV or résumé.
    • Completed questionnaire (request questionnaire from the International office).

    Selection:

    The International office and faculties will review all applications and the best-suited candidates to become QE Scholars will be selected. Selection will be merit-based, and will consider academic achievement as well as the candidate's potential to succeed as a QE Scholar.

    Preparation:

    Selected QE Scholars must go through several steps before the placement can begin. They must:

    • Sign the QE Scholarship agreement.
    • Complete financial request forms with Student Awards and Financial Aid.
    • Prepare all travel requirements, including passports, visas and travel arrangements.
    • Participate in a pre-departure orientation, and prepare a pre-departure report.
    • Comply with International office and/or faculty pre-departure requirements, such as proof of health insurance, registration of travel, etc.
    • Participate in a debrief session upon return, and complete a Scholar Narrative Report
  • QE Scholarships for graduate student research exchanges

    The QE Scholarship Program provides opportunities for graduate students to gain an international experience as a part of their studies at UOIT. The program provides scholarships of $6,000 for an exchange with a UOIT partner university in a Commonwealth country. Placements last a minimum of three months. Exchange opportunities are developed first with the faculties and graduate programs, and placement availability is subject to the availability of opportunities with partners and program funding. All QE Scholars must participate in on-campus activities before and after the placement as a condition of the scholarship.

    Eligibility:

    Candidates for the QE Scholarship Program must:

    • Be registered in a graduate program.
    • Be 35 years of age or under at time of their application.
    • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    • Study or conduct research on a full-time basis at the partner institution.
    • Be in good standing and meet any requirements set by the student’s faculty.

    Application and selection:

    The International office works directly with the faculties and graduate programs to develop exchange opportunities. If you have any questions about QE Scholarship research exchange opportunities for graduate students, please contact the International office.

    Applications for the Summer 2017 term must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies via gradscholarship@uoit.ca by Friday, January 13. 

    Preparation

    • Participate in a pre-departure orientation and prepare a pre-departure report.
    • Comply with International office and/or faculty pre-departure requirements, such as proof of health insurance, registration of travel, etc.
    • Participate in a debrief session upon return, and complete a Scholar Narrative Report.
  • QE Scholarships for Undergraduate research - Software and Electrical Engineering Students

    One research placement is available in Singapore for Summer 2016.

    The QE Scholarship Program provides opportunities for upper-year undergraduates to gain an international experience as a part of their studies at UOIT. The program provides scholarships of up to $6,000 for an experiential learning placement with a UOIT partner in a Commonwealth country. Placements last a minimum of three months. As a condition of the scholarship, all QE Scholars must participate in on-campus activities before and after the placement.

    Eligibility

    Candidates for the QE Scholarship Program must:

    • Be entering their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies.
    • Be 35 years of age or younger at time of their application.
    • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    • Work, study or conduct research on a full-time basis at the partner institution.
    • Be in good standing and meet GPA requirements set by FEAS: 3.3 GPA.

    Placements

    The following placement is open for competition to FEAS students:

    • Research placement in Pattern Recognition and/or Evolutionary Computation at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Research activities include:
      • Conducting literature survey.
      • Designing, enhancing and analyzing the swarm and evolutionary algorithms.
      • Conducting experimental simulations and utilizing benchmark problems and performance metrics for their assessments.
      • Results analysis and comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms in the field.
      • Reporting new findings as conference or journal papers. 

    Applications

    Student interested in a QE Scholarship Program placement and scholarship must apply directly to the International office. Email internationaloffice@uoit.ca with the subject line QES application. Applications will be forwarded to faculties for review. Applications for the Summer 2016 placement are due Friday, March 18 at 4 p.m.

    Applications must include: 

    • One- to two-page Statement of Interest, including how this experience fits within your educational and career goals.
    • Scanned copy of your transcripts, including current GPA.
    • Up-to-date curriculum vitae or resumé.
